WWII Combat Veteran Dies at 99

Please join us in remembering WWII Veteran Daniel Breier, who recently passed away in New York. He was 99. In 2019, we had the distinct privilege to capture his wartime memories, ensuring that his story of service and sacrifice lives on for future generations.

Breier was drafted into the Army in 1943, and after training, was shipped to New Guinea, where he saw combat for the first time with the 24th Infantry Division. He eventually helped liberate the Philippines, seeing action on the islands of Leyte and Mindoro. Breier and his division played a significant role in the Battle of Leyte, where they conducted amphibious landings and engaged in intense combat against Japanese forces. They also served in the Battle of Okinawa in 1945, fighting alongside the 1st Marine Division.

In addition to their combat actions, Breier and the 24th Infantry Division also participated in the occupation of Japan after the war ended, and they were one of the first units to arrive in Tokyo Bay.

Breier was discharged from the Army as a Sergeant Major in 1946 and married shortly after returning to the states. He and his wife Zelda were married for over 67 years.

May his service and sacrifice never be forgotten. Rest in Peace.
