      <image:title>Rex Sage - Rex Russell Sage (1919-1968)</image:title>
<image:caption>Heroism is a word that defined the life of Colonel Rex Russell Sage. Courage and gallantry ran through his blood. A decorated veteran of both WWII and Korea, Sage volunteered to go to Vietnam, where his country and the Vietnamese people needed him most. His thirty years of dedicated service tragically ended over the skies of South East Asia in 1968, when he made the ultimate sacrifice defending and protecting our freedom. Colonel Sage's medals, photographs, award citations, and many other artifacts pertaining to his military service were donated to the WWII Veterans History Project by his daughter, Cynthia. Rex was born in Oberlin, Kansas, on May 16, 1919, and graduated from Decatur County High School in 1936. He majored in mechanical engineering at the University of Kansas, where he participated in the Reserve Officer Training Corps. He entered service in the Army upon graduation in 1940 and was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant. During WWII, from 1940 to 1943, Sage served as a company commander with the 4th Infantry Regiment in Alaska and the Aleutian Islands, making three amphibious landings against the Japanese. Already a seasoned combat veteran of WWII and the Korean War, and serving as a director at the United States Army Infantry School at Fort Benning, Georgia, Colonel Sage volunteered for duty in Vietnam. In May of 1968, with his nation once again at war, Sage left for duty overseas one last time. On the morning of September 8, 1968, Colonel Sage boarded a US Army Bell UH-1H Iroquois helicopter from the 155th Assault Helicopter Company on a VIP flight from Ban Me Thout, South Vietnam, to inspect the Duc Lap Green Beret camp along the Cambodian border. Also aboard the helicopter was Brigadier General Truong Quang An, commander of the 23rd Division (South Vietnam), of which Sage was the senior American advisor. At around 10:30 AM local time, roughly 12 klicks from the Special Forces base, loud popping and grinding noises from the transmission/engine area were heard by the gunner and crew chief, simultaneously with complete loss of power. Warrant Officer Redlick Koppel, the aircraft commander, initiated a mayday call and an autorotation. With absolutely no forced landing areas to autorotate into, Koppel was forced to land into 200-foot trees and extremely dense foliage. The autorotation was terminated with zero airspeed at treetop level, causing the helicopter to fall straight through the trees. Upon contacting the ground, the tail boom remained intact but was severed from the fuselage. The main rotor and transmission were still in place. The gunner broke the window out of the right cargo door and pulled himself out. It appeared that all personnel in the cargo compartment were unconscious. The gunner attempted to pull the General out through the window of the cargo door, but his attempt failed. He then went forward to the right pilot door and tried to get it open, but was unsuccessful. At this time, the helicopter burst into flames, and the gunner jumped back from the burning aircraft. The crew chief was able to crawl out of his position just before the fire. The flames were observed coming through the tree canopy by a forward air controller aircraft. Anthony Benfatti was an American radio operator serving at Ban Me Thuot and vividly remembers the day of the crash. "As we monitored the frequency, heard the "May Day" calls and voice traffic of the follow-up ships, it became apparent that all was lost amidst the fiery tall teak trees." Colonel Rex Sage, WO1 Redlick Koppel, WO1 William Harwood, Master Sergeant Thomas Barnard, along with Brigadier General Truong Quang An and his wife Duong Thi Kim An, perished in the hills of Vietnam. Immediately after the crash, it was reported that the helicopter was shot down by North Vietnamese gunners, but later investigations revealed that mechanical failures were the cause of the crash. At the time of his death, Colonel Sage was 49 years old and had served in the Army for nearly 30 years. He left behind his wife Jane and their 10-year-old daughter, Cynthia. For his courage and valor in Vietnam, he was posthumously awarded the Distinguished Service Medal, Silver Star, the Air Medal with 1 Oak Leaf Cluster, and the National Order of Vietnam 5th Class. During his distinguished Army career, Sage was also awarded the Legion of Merit with 1 Oak Leaf Cluster, the Bronze Star with combat "V" and 1 Oak Leaf Cluster, the Army Commendation Medal, the Asiatic–Pacific Campaign Medal with one campaign star, Army of Occupation Medal with Japan clasp, the National Defense Service Medal, the Korean Service Medal with 3 campaign stars, the Vietnam Service Medal, the United Nations Korea Medal, and the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal.</image:caption>

<image:caption>The WWII Veterans History Project is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to giving the past a future, one story at a time. Founded in 2015 by journalist, author, and photographer Benjamin Mack-Jackson, we work to preserve the memories of the Greatest Generation and inspire future generations to remember their sacrifices. Through documentary films, traveling museum exhibitions, and educational programs, we bring these stories to life, ensuring that the lessons of World War II are never forgotten.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Over the past ten years, we’ve traveled across the United States and the world, capturing untold stories of service and sacrifice. Our interviews with World War II veterans have resulted in the production of two dozen documentary films, preserving their memories for generations to come.</image:caption>

<image:caption>We’re on a mission to ensure history isn’t forgotten by future generations. Our educational programs have changed how history is taught in schools, created new interactive curriculum for students, and worked to educate and inspire future world leaders to better appreciate and understand the past.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Home - SUPPORT OUR MISSION</image:title>
<image:caption>Of the 16 million American men and women who served in uniform during WWII, less than 1% are still alive today. That’s fewer than 65,000 survivors. It’s estimated that 150 die every single day. The quest to capture their memories is a literal race against time. Your support is instrumental in our efforts to preserve the memories of WWII veterans and share their stories with future generations.</image:caption>

<image:caption>The Traveling Museum of WWII is not just a museum, it’s an experience. Our exhibits allow people to come in contact with pieces of history from 80 years ago and learn the stories behind each item. Everything on display has been donated by World War II veterans or their families. They’re not just pieces in a museum, but stories of these heroes’ lives. Want to schedule a museum visit? <image:title>James Johnson - James Johnson</image:title>
<image:caption>James Milton Johnson was born in Indianapolis, Indiana, on November 17, 1915. He began his service in the US Army in April of 1942, serving as an enlisted man with the 2nd Cavalry Division at Fort Clark, Texas. On June 2, 1943, he accepted a commission as a Warrant Officer Junior Grade, continuing his service with the 2nd Cav with even more responsibility. In late February 1944, Johnson was transferred to Fort Huachuca, Arizona, and assigned to the 599th Field Artillery Battalion, 92nd Infantry Division, famously known as the Buffalo Soldiers. At Fort Huachuca, the Buffalo Soldiers trained for combat, preparing for deployment to a combat zone. The WWII Veterans History Project was entrusted with artifacts from his time in service by his daughter Maria, and his son Jimmy, and we are proud to have a display honoring him in our Traveling Museum of WWII. It is an honor to be the caretaker of James Johnson's story and ensure that future generations remember the sacrifices he made for our country and the world more than 75 years ago.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Roy Morrison was born in 1924 in Metheun, Massachusetts, and served as a Private First Class in L Company, 60th Infantry Regiment, 9th Infantry Division during WWII. Landing on Utah Beach on D-Day + 4 (June 10, 1944), Roy saw fierce combat in Normandy until he was severely wounded in action. On July 14, 1944, Roy's 20th birthday, he was shot by a German machine gun near the city of St. Lo. During this attack, he was hit by two bullets in the leg, but at the time, doctors only found one. Nearly 60 years later, doctors discovered the second bullet, much to his surprise. It was removed, and Roy wore it around his neck on a chain for the rest of his life. He recalled that, "If I carried the weight all these years, I could carry the weight the rest of my life." For wounds received in action, Roy was awarded the Purple Heart Medal. After his passing in March of 2019, his son Frank donated the Purple Heart, bullet, dog tag, and other artifacts from his father's wartime service to the WWII Veterans History Project.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Richard Sable - Richard Sable (1924-2019)</image:title>
<image:caption>Richard Sable served in the 452nd Bomb Group, 8th Air Force, as a ball turret gunner aboard B-17 Flying Fortress aircraft. On his 8th mission, May 12, 1944, his plane "Princess Pat" was hit by German fighters and flak during a bombing raid over Czechoslovakia. "We had to leave the plane because it was on fire, and it was ready to go," he recalled. "I had never parachuted in my life, but I did this time." After being forced to bail out and parachute over enemy territory, Sable was swiftly captured by the Germans and taken as a Prisoner of War. He spent 11 months as a "Guest of the Third Reich", imprisoned with fellow airmen at Stalag Luft IV. While he wasn't abused or tortured during captivity, the conditions were far from ideal. Solid food was scarce, and the wintertime was miserably cold. After almost a year in captivity, Sable and his fellow POWs were liberated by the British Army in April 1945. Mr. Sable's memories of life in captivity in Nazi Germany during WWII are truly incredible, and it was an honor to interview him to preserve his memories for future generations. In addition to his video interview, we are proud to preserve his story in the Traveling Museum of WWII using artifacts that he donated, including medals, patches, and letters he wrote from his time as a POW at Stalag Luft IV.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Edward Quigley - Edward Quigley</image:title>
<image:caption>Edward Quigley was inducted in the Army Air Force in 1942, in his hometown of Chicago, Illinois, and was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant in early 1943. Lt. Quigley received instructions to report to Topeka, Kansas, where he was assigned to a B-24 Bomber as part of the 392nd Bomb Group. His unit was sent overseas, and stationed at a base in Wendling, England. During the early months of 1944, they flew missions targeting airfields and factories with the goal of destroying Germany’s ability to wage war. On April 8, 1944, Quigley was a co-pilot on a mission to bomb an airbase outside of Brunswick, Germany, when their formation was hit by German fighters. Almost immediately, two engines were hit and the plane caught fire, sending the B-24 into a circular spin. With no hope to recover the plane, the crew began to bail out. Quigley remembered, “I did not want to leave that plane over the middle of Germany, but I had no choice. I parachuted down into an open farm field and was now an official guest of the Third Reich.” As he gathered his parachute, he was swiftly captured by two German soldiers and brought to the local town jail and interrogated by an SS officer who confiscated all of his personal belongings. After several days in solitary confinement, Quigley was transported by boxcar to Stalag Luft 1, in Barth, Germany. Upon his arrival at the camp, he was assigned to Barrack 7, which held about 140 captured Allied officers. Every morning, the POWs were awaken by the loud shouts of the German guards and lined up outside for roll call. While they weren't tortured or abused, the conditions at the camp weren't ideal. The food was sparse, the living conditions were rough, which caused many POWs to die from the cold or starvation. Throughout his time at the Stalag, Quigley and his fellow prisoners dug over 100 tunnels, none of which had reached the wire. Due to a secret radio in his barrack, they received five minutes of BBC News radio every day which gave the POWs vital information on the progress of the war. This kept their spirits and morale high, as every broadcast would detail the rapid American advance across Europe. In April 1945, Allied forces were closing in on Germany, and the Soviets were just miles away from Stalag Luft 1. One morning, the POWs woke up to find that the German guards had left their posts and were headed toward the American lines to surrender. Within 24 hours, the Russians arrived at the camp, liberating thousands of Allied POWs. Quigley was a prisoner of war in Nazi Germany for over a year. Upon his return home, he was promoted to 1st Lieutenant just before his discharge from the Army Air Force. The WWII Veterans History Project had the privilege to interview Mr. Quigley and capture his stories. His interview can be viewed on our website, and many artifacts from his time in service can be seen in the Traveling Museum of WWII. On April 21, 2018, Edward Quigley passed away at the age of 96.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Bill Cumbaa - Bill Cumbaa</image:title>
<image:caption>As a rifle platoon leader in the 1st Marine Division, Captain Bill Cumbaa saw fierce combat on the islands of Peleliu and Okinawa, two of the Pacific Theater's deadliest campaigns. "Wild Bill" was a hardened combat leader, gaining the respect of his men and earning two Silver Stars and two Purple Hearts – one set on each island. On September 15, 1944, US Marines landed on Peleliu, one of the Palau Islands in the western Pacific. A volcanic island just six miles long and two miles wide, Peleliu was held by a garrison of more than 10,000 elite Japanese troops. The main objective on the island was an airstrip, which could threaten American operations in the Philippines. The Japanese used Peleliu's unique terrain to their advantage, stationing troops in caves above the invading Marines to inflict the maximum amount of damage on the troops below. The elaborate cave and tunnel system throughout the island allowed the enemy to hunker down and emerge unscathed from Allied naval bombardment, which occurred prior to the troop landings. After the initial assault, Bill Cumbaa and his fellow Marines made their way across the island, successfully capturing the airstrip on September 17, 1944, in an attack which inflicted heavy casualties. When the Marines began to advance northward on the island, they were hit by heavy Japanese resistance who were dug into the rocky surface of Umurbrogol Mountain, which the Marines dubbed “Bloody Nose Ridge.” On September 22, 1944, Bill Cumbaa led his platoon on a patrol behind enemy lines toward the ridge to secure valuable information about the Japanese defenses. He and his platoon were exposed to point-blank enemy fire, but he managed to complete his mission with the loss of only one man killed and one wounded. For his courageous actions on that day, Lt. Cumbaa was awarded the Silver Star Medal. During the fighting on Peleliu, Bill was wounded in action and awarded the Purple Heart Medal. But Bill Cumbaa's war wasn't over. He went on to fight in the battle of Okinawa in May 1945 and was awarded another Silver Star and Purple Heart for his courageous acts of valor during that campaign.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Rodney Adams - Rodney Adams (1916-2009)</image:title>
<image:caption>Rodney Homer Adams was born on November 24, 1916, in Newport, Maine, and served as a Motor Machinist's Mate 1st Class (MoMM1c) in the US Navy during WWII. He entered service on December 3, 1942, and was attached to PT Boat Squadrons 3 and 10 in the South Pacific. A PT boat, short for patrol torpedo boat, was a small, fast, and inexpensive torpedo-armed surface vessel. It was valued for its maneuverability and speed but hampered by ineffective torpedoes, limited armament, and fragile construction. PT Boats were used as ambush vessels, escorts for other ships, transport for commando operations, as well as protection for troops during amphibious landings. Adams’ first assignment was onboard PT-59, commanded by Lieutenant John F. Kennedy. Kennedy took command of PT-59 in September 1943, choosing to stay and fight in the Pacific Theater after his previous boat, PT-109, was rammed and sunk by the Japanese destroyer Amagiri. Lieutenant Kennedy would become President of the United States in 1960. Aboard PT-59, Adams saw combat in the Solomon Islands and participated in a number of missions during his time serving under JFK. When PT-59 was sent back to the US for repairs, Adams was attached to PT 171 under a new commander and saw combat in the New Guinea campaign. These artifacts are from Rodney Adams’ service in WWII and were generously donated to The Traveling Museum of WWII by his family. They include his original dog tag, PT boat badge, sleeve rate, documents and photographs, as well as PT Boat and Squadron reunion patches. One of the most personal items is a heart shaped Navy locket with Rodney’s picture inside which his mother wore while he served overseas. Motor Machinist's Mate 1st Class Adams passed away on January 6, 2009, at the age of 92.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Ralph Waldo Hungerford was born on April 21, 1896, in Windsor, New York, and had a distinguished 31-year career in the US Navy that spanned two world wars. Hungerford's illustrious naval career began when he received an appointment to the United States Naval Academy in 1915, but his four-year term was shortened to three under the pressure of World War I. In 1918, just before the war's end, he accepted a commission in the US Navy. Throughout the interwar period, Hungerford gained recognition as one of the Navy's most promising young officers and was assigned to duty stations both in the United States and South America. He was director of the Naval Reserves at the Philadelphia Navy Yard from 1940 to 1941 but returned to the sea shortly after the Pearl Harbor attack.</image:caption>

<image:caption>We bring history to life through traveling WWII museum exhibits presented at schools, libraries, and institutions across the country. Partnering with museums for rotating displays, we share authentic stories and artifacts with thousands of people each year. Our ultimate goal is to establish a permanent museum in Central Florida, pairing our extensive oral history archive with artifacts to create a center for remembrance, education, and preservation.</image:caption>
